In the history of contemporary art, Takashi Murakami is recognized as the first contemporary artist to create original art-based characters. His "Flower" motif has become one of the most beloved and widely recognized characters in the world, both as a personal icon and as a character within contemporary art. Although Murakami holds a PhD in Nihonga (Japanese painting) from Tokyo University of the Arts, flowers have long been a traditional subject in Japanese art, as reflected in the concept of Setsugetsuka (snow, moon, and flowers). Additionally, his all-over compositional style incorporates elements of Abstract Expressionism.
